Banking Investments in Fossil Fuels
Councils across the UK are investing more than £16 billion in the fossil fuel industry according to the Campaign Against Climate Change.
Maxime of Fossil Free Coventry has produced the following summary of information about the value of the investment of banks with branches in Coventry in fossil fuels and the number of their ecocide projects [1].
[1] Ecocide is “loss or damage to, or destruction of ecosystem(s) of a given territory(ies), such that peaceful enjoyment by the inhabitants has been or will be severely diminished.”
Note that British barrister Polly Higgins led a decade-long campaign for “ecocide” to be recognised as a crime against humanity. She sold her house and gave up a high-paying job so she could dedicate herself to attempting to create a law that would make corporate executives and government ministers criminally liable for the damage they do to ecosystems. She died in April 2019. See this Guardian article. The website Ecocide Law was founded to continue the campaign
