Coventry Air Quality Action Plan
In July 2017, the UK Government published a plan to reduce NO2 emissions. Coventry was named as one of the 28 towns and cities forecast to exceed legal limits by 2021.
The city council responded by working with the government’s Joint Air Quality Unit to develop the Local Air Quality Action Plan to reduce NO2 emissions in the shortest time. It recommended measures such as
- Working with bus companies to ensure that Coventry’s buses are low or zero emission vehicles
- Working with taxi operators to ensure our taxi fleet is low emission, preferably electric taxis built in the city
- Working with local businesses to ensure that fleets [pool cars, vans, lorries] maximise the use of low emission vehicles
- Work with schools, colleges, universities and businesses to develop and implement travel plans aimed at encouraging sustainable and active travel, especially for local journeys within the city
- Work within local communities to promote sustainable and active travel and allow residents to make better informed decisions on how they travel around the city
- Improvements that make it easier, and safer, to walk around the city
- New and improved cycle routes connecting our local communities and making it easier to travel around the city by bike
