Join the Big Plastic Count
The Big Plastic Count aims to push the UK government, brands and supermarkets to take bold action to tackle the plastic crisis.
Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic are working together to create the UK’s biggest nationwide investigation into household plastic waste.
They want to uncover the truth about how much plastic is passing through our homes and what happens to it. They want so persuade the UK government to commit reduce single plastic use by 50% by 2025 and switching to reusable options that work for everyone and ban sending our waste to other countries.
Everyday Plastic founder, Daniel Webb, collected every piece of his plastic waste for a year. With a scientific researcher, he developed a unique methodology to calculate his personal plastic footprint.
Now, The Big Plastic Count offers every one of us the same chance to discover what happens to our plastic waste once we throw it away.
They want people to help them gather new, game-changing evidence that will push the government to take bold action on plastic.
They will send you a free pack with everything you need (on recycled paper and plastic-free of course!).
They also offer a Living With Less Plastic Handbook
You will tally all the plastic packaging you throw away for one week – 16-22 May. Then submit your results on their website.
They will give you a personal plastic footprint and reveal what really happens to plastic when it leaves your home.
Once all the results are in, they will share the national picture and the next steps on pushing the government into action.
Schools can take part too
They have created a teacher’s pack and free resources, including classroom-based activities and a PowerPoint lesson for 9-12 years.
They realise that teachers have a lot on their plate so schools can do The Big Plastic Count in any week that suits them. The only thing to remember is that data submission closes on the 31st May.
