Just Stop Oil
According to Wikipedia, Just Stop Oil is a UK environmental activist group which, by using civil resistance and direct action, aims to make the British government commit to halting new fossil fuel licensing and production.
Since it launched in February 2022 it held a month of oil terminal disruptions across Southern England in April and in November it closed the M25 on several days.
The group has been criticised for their protest methods, which have included blocking roads and vandalism. Its supporters have been arrested over 2000 times and several have gone to prison.
In November the UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has accused police of failing in their duty and demanded an intensified crackdown on Just Stop Oil activists disrupting the M25 motorway.
This follows a series of incidents at which the police have already been criticised for illegally arresting accredited journalists reporting on the protests. This resulting in prime minister Rishi Sunak saying he believed it was “vital journalists are able to do their job”.
Hence confusion within government, which has been a theme of UK government for some months in 2022, continues, but there is no suggestion that the UK will take any positive action to commit to halting new fossil fuel licensing and production, which is what Just Stop Oil is supposed to be trying to achieve.
