World Energy Outlook 2021
The International Energy Agency IEA has published its flagship report World Energy Outlook 2021 on October during the lead-up to COP26 in Glasgow in November.
They conclude that even if the pledges already announced by governments (the Announced Pledges Scenario or APS) are implemented in time and in full (red line in graph below), there will still be a huge gap between what is achieved and what is needed to net zero emissions (NZE) by 2050 and so limit global warming to 1.5C (yellow line in graph below).
The graph below, produced by Carbon Brief, shows the gap.
The red line shows global fossil fuel energy supply if all the of APS are met.
The yellow line shows what is needed to limit global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
The black line shows historical energy supply from fossil fuels.
The grey line shows the IEA Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS).
The sources for their data are IEA World Energy Outlook 2021 and BP Statistical Review 2020.
