Climate change is the biggest threat to human existence. We urgently need to limit temperature rises to 1.5°C or we will face irreversible climate change which will cause catastrophic land loss and make parts of our planet inhabitable. Millions of people are already being directly affected by large increases in wildfires, floods, heatwaves, droughts and sea level rises.
Reform Party
The Reform Party national website’s policy page has no reference to climate change.
Mayoral Election
The West Midlands Combined Authority, for which the Mayor is the chair, declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has a five year plan to deliver a 33% reduction in carbon use across local transport, homes and businesses by 2026. They also have a vision to make the West Midlands net zero by 2041.
The candidates for the election are
Conservative and Unionist Party: Andy Street
His page on Tackling the climate change challenge has not been updated since 2021.
Green Party: Siobhan Harper Nune
Her candidate’s page mentions climate change twice:
Siobhan’s campaign will focus on making the Combined Authority work harder for our most left behind communities, be more accountable to residents, and increase the pace and scale of regional action on climate change…
“Action on the climate is too little and too late. We need action now, not future promises. I will work to increase the pace and scale of change. For example, greater action on warmer homes so people don’t have to choose between eating and heating.”
Labour & Co-op Party: Richard Parker
He has no website and we cannot find any link between him and climate change.
Liberal Democrat Party: Sunny Virk
The Liberal Democrat Party page announcing his candidature has no mention of climate change.
Reform uk: Elaine Williams
She is reported as saying: “The pursuit of Net Zero is a catastrophe for our region. It is making everyone poorer and colder. I am standing to stop the Net Zero agenda, the low traffic neighbourhood schemes, clean air zones, and other Net Zero related road restrictions that are damaging the region.”
