Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council’s will be running an invite only Climate Conference on 11 March. Community groups dedicated to taking action on climate change are excluded. Coventry Green New Deal and others will meet outside the Slate to protest peacefully about their exclusion.
They will speak to people entering the conference, handing them leaflets and inviting them to their “People’s Climate Conference” which will take place from 10:30-12pm in Room L4, Science Concourse, also Warwick University.
This will be a peaceful action designed to raise awareness of the exclusionary practices of Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council.
Climate activists who take part believe that climate action needs to be driven from below, by the communities that will be impacted by policies and who need the investment that such policies would bring to address the social and material crisis they face today.
Any policies imposed from above that are not co-designed by communities and individuals that have been working on these issues for years, sometimes decades, will fall well short of what is needed and in many cases will ultimately be damaging.
Democratic participation should neither be an afterthought nor a burden. They believe it is their right and true power to change the world for the better. Together, they believe people are are more intelligent and can overcome the biases and limitations that have got us into this mess in the first place.
They call on both Councils to turn back on the path they have chosen with this ‘invite only’, exclusionary conference and start again, with open arms. They invite all attendees to come to our alternative conference to start work on a people’s climate strategy.
