Agenda
1) West Midlands Mayor Election May 2nd, 2024.
The West Midlands mayor is the only directly elected politician on the West Midlands Combined Authority. Much power rests with the councillors sent from local authorities, officers, and Local Enterprise Partnerships, all organised into its various boards. However, the mayor has a high profile and influence; the election next May will be significant.
How can we ensure that the climate crisis is at the top of the agenda during the campaigning? How can we best promote our vision of a zero-carbon region?
2) XR Climate Conversations
Following the success of the “Big One”, XR has not stopped its work. One of its new activities is the Climate Conversations initiative. A speaker from XR will explain.
3) Update on the attack on democratic rights
4) Next West Midlands Greener Together Forum.
The last forum in Tipton was on “What can the region do to tackle food injustices and access to healthy, sustainable food?”
Our last meeting featured the greenhouse gas emissions from regional Industry and Commerce (about one third of the total), so this seems a good topic for the autumn WMGT forum. Should we suggest this?
The proposal for a trade union conference on the future of the car industry came up under this item at our last meeting, so any progress could be reported here.
5) COP28
There is interest in the Warwick and Leamington area for an event at the time of COP28, but what about elsewhere?
COP 28 will take place from 30 November until 12 December 2023 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has named an oil company chief to lead the UN climate talks!
