This online event organised by Stratford Climate Action, with guest speaker James Meadway, will explain and explore the idea of a Green New Deal. We often say our economic system is broken and call for more spending on the transition to a sustainable economy. But what do we mean by a ‘Green New Deal’? Why isn’t leaving the climate emergency to the free market going to work? Why is it wrong to say we can’t afford one? How should we look to distinguish a genuine Green New Deal from political greenwash? Is a Green New Deal a way to restore economic growth and the capitalist system, or should we aspire to a post-capitalist Degrowth Green New Deal? This event will explore these issues and more, followed by a Q&A.
James Meadway is an economist whose work has focused on developing viable alternatives to neoliberalism, and has published widely on democratic ownership, environmental economics, and automation and the digital economy. He was previously economic advisor to the Shadow Chancellor, and chief economist at the New Economics Foundation, after previously working for HM Treasury, Nesta and the Royal Society. He has taught at SOAS, City, Cambridge and Sussex Universities, and appears regularly on broadcast media as a commentator on UK politics.
